52 Flags
This work was made in response to a 9 month residency with the Jinnah Centre, Burnley and Super Slow Way.
The Leeds to Liverpool canal runs directly though Daneshouse and Stoneyholme shaping the community, culture and traditions of those who live there.
These 52 flags symbolically represent the 52 years since the Jinnah Centre first opened its doors. Made from cloth produced at Queens Street Mill in Burnley, they echo the textile history of the area. The flags are embedded with the stories, thoughts, heritage, skills, patterns and languages of this place.
Flags are often used politically, to denote territory and ownership over a place. We sent these flags back to the canal, marking the ownership of this place by every member of the community.
